If, like many others, you’re spending more time than usual indoors then it could be time to think about bringing the outdoors to you!
Here are some of our top tips:
1. Plants, plants and more plants. Indoor plants have been having a bit of a moment lately and for good reason too. They are great for brightening up your indoor space, generating feel-good energy and improving air quality. When choosing plants, go for low maintenance and hard to kill types. Our favourites are mother-in-law’s tongue, asparagus fern, fiddle leaf fig, yucca plants, spider plants, and rubber plants. What’s more, companies such as Patch allow you to order your plants online before delivering them straight to your door.
2. Incorporate natural materials. Wood, bamboo and cork are all natural materials that can help bring a more organic element to your home. These are great for floorboards and countertops instead of synthetic or man-made materials. Other natural materials such as wicker, rattan, jute and stone not only look stylish but also provide sturdy options when it comes to furnishings!
3. Let the light in. Aside from bigger tasks such as installing skylights and glass panelling in your doors, there are a few simple things you can do straight away. These include replacing heavy curtains and drapes with lighter materials, and hanging mirrors and reflective objects such as chandeliers and shiny photo frames to bounce light around the room. Also when it comes to your windows and glass-panelled doors, make sure you give them a good clean, and trim back any trees or shrubbery blocking light from outside.
4. Go for a natural colour palette. Avoid dark colours and busy prints – instead opt for natural colours that remind you of the outside such as greens, yellows and terracotta shades. To create the illusion of height and space try painting the ceiling a couple of shades lighter than your walls!
Focus on scent. Woody scents such as oud and cedar can really help to bring an earthy feel to your home. Similarly, floral scents can also be used to incorporate a bit of spring and sunshine into your surroundings. We love the Diptyque Feu de Bois Scented Candle which features woodland scents and The White Company’s Seychelles Botanical candle which uses coconut, orange and amber scents to help conjure up memories of the beach!
